I would argue that they don't serve the same purpose in their respective movies. Catching Fire uses the transition to IMAX to give the games sequence of the movie a larger than life, almost otherworldly quality. It serves to really separate the realities of the Hunger Games from the scope imagery that depicted the world outside the arena.
